2010 SCHOLARSHIP RECEPTION

On Saturday, July 17th, MRSPT announced this year’s recipients of the Military Road School Donnessa Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund awards at a special program and reception held at the Charles Sumner School Museum and Archives.

We were privileged to have honorary Military Road School alumnus Karen Gray Houston offer invaluable words of encouragement to the awardees.  Drawing upon her personal life experiences as a college student, Ms. Houston spoke of the need for them to remain diligently resourceful in pursuing their careers.  She also shared how those experiences had served her in previous employment as well as in her lengthy tenure as a news correspondent with Fox 5 News.  Mrs. Houston’s remarks appropriately reflected a sincere personal and professional concern that the students succeed as she challenged them to remain focused but flexible.

Special music was inspirationally provided by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sutton and Miss Amanda Sutton.  A gifted musician, Mr. Sutton serves as CEO of the Castleridge Music Group and professionally utilizes his musical skills in many capacities, including performances throughout the country as an accompanist for well-known artists. As a young man, Mr. Sutton received encouragement to develop his musical talent from someone in his community; and he shared with the awardees a commitment to do likewise as he reinforced the importance of being sure they remember to “give back.”

Ms. Lisa Shea provided information to attendees about the possibilities of completing or furthering one’s education through the Job Corps.  Because pursuing a college degree is not a realistic alternative for many young men and women, Ms. Shea spoke about the numerous benefits available through Job Corps programs that enable participants at various educational levels to successfully acquire skills and embark upon careers that provide gainful employment.
