who exemplified the courageous spirit of a generation determined to
eradicate racial prejudice, was recognized for his life-long commitment to
achieve equality. |

Sumner, a noted Civil War abolitionist who was severely beaten on the floor
of the U.S, Senate by South Carolina Senator Andrew Brooks. |
