The Legacy of Educational Excellence Awards Banquet, hosted by MRSPT and the Washington, D.C. branch of the Black Heritage Society, was held on Saturday, October 25, 2008, at the Gallaudet University Kellogg Center.  Six Washington metropolitan area recipients that have significantly contributed toward promoting excellence in education during the past year were recognized for their work.

Guest speaker Donald Temple, Esq., a well-known Washington attorney, reflected upon the educational history of African-Americans in general and offered critical insights regarding the importance of today’s youth acquiring a quality education.  Special recognition was also given to Dr. C.R. Gibbs, nominated by MRSPT and selected as the 2008 recipient of the Mayor's Award for Excellence in Public Education. The multi-talented DuBose family provided special music during the evening; and among those recognized for their ongoing support of MRSPT’s endeavors to preserve the legacy of the Military Road School were Mrs. Doris Taylor, a former teacher, and Rev. John Jones, Assistant Pastor of the St. Luke Baptist Church, the neighborhood church where many of the Military Road School’s programs were held.
