Signage Replaced on Military Road School Building
With the assistance of Ms.
Kim Williams, National Register Coordinator for the D. C. Historic
Preservation Office, missing signage has been replaced on the historic
Military Road School building. The original structure, designed by
Municipal Architect Snowden Ashford in 1911 and completed in 1912, closed as
a public school in 1954. Located near Fort Stevens at
1375 Missouri Avenue in northwest
D.C., it is the successor to a frame public schoolhouse that was among the
first handful of Civil War era schools built in 1864 and 1865 to serve the
influx of freedmen into the capital city. The Latin American Bilingual
(LAMB) Public Charter School, which purchased the building from the District
of Columbia government, restored its exterior and has expanded the site to
include additional facilities.
