Nannie Helen Burroughs Observance Day
2019
On Friday, May 10th, MRSPT Board members were joined by other attendees who share a commitment to recognize and honor the legacy of civil activist and educator Nannie Helen Burroughs at the site of her former school in northeast Washington, DC. In addition to the wreath laying ceremony, Ms. Kimberly Springle, Director, Archivist, and Curator for the Charles Sumner School Museum and Archives, shared highlights from her thesis on Miss
Burroughs as well as interesting and significant facts about her life’s work. Because uncertain weather conditions were a factor for many who had planned to attend, MRSPT has invited Ms. Springle to return in 2020 for next year’s event, which would be scheduled to coincide with the date of May 10, 1975, officially declared by D.C. Mayor Walter Washington as Nannie Helen Burroughs Day.
Annual Prayer Breakfast
2019
“The Importance of Prayer” was this year’s theme at MRSPT’s Annual Prayer breakfast held at the St. Luke Baptist Church in northwest DC. Minister Alan Cole of the First Baptist Church of Mount Rainier offered Meditations reflecting upon prayer’s significance in today’s world and host pastor, Rev. Aubrey C. Lewis, as well as Rev. Dr. Melvin D. Wallace
of the Helping Hands Community Ministries in Washington, DC, also offered prayers. Among this year’s guests were Ms. Carolyn Baker, a first-time attendee who is the Treasurer for the Daughters of Union Veterans, and Mrs. Doris Taylor, who taught at the Military Road School from 1952 until it closed in 1954, pictured with alumni who were also program participants.
